A recent analysis claims that by failing to clearly display the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) on their labels, fashion brands are losing out on a significant potential.

A prominent international coalition of national forest certification programs is called PEFC. They support national forest certification programs that are created via multi-stakeholder procedures and customized to the needs and goals of the local community.

Even though the textile industry uses a lot of materials from forests, labels for clothes rarely display certifications attesting to sustainable sourcing. Clothing certifications are rare, although the PEFC label is frequently seen on paper products.

PEF's recent Textile Exchange conference in London brought to light that about 7% of raw materials used in the production of textiles originate from trees.

"In terms of quantity, the textile sector depends almost twice as much on raw materials from trees as it does on wool," stated Julia Kozlik, Market Engagement Manager and Textile Program Lead at PEFC.

Since forests are the primary source of man-made cellulosic fibers (MMCFs), fashion firms must comprehend and support sustainable forest management.

According to Julia Kozlik, in order to guarantee sustainability, brands using wood-based components must have a responsible sourcing policy.

Kozlik issued a warning, pointing out that while many fashion firms have switched to paper-based packaging as a supposedly more environmentally friendly substitute for plastic, it's also important to take into account the sustainability of wood-based materials.

Additionally, sourcing all materials derived from trees from forests that are responsibly managed can have a positive effect on deforestation and lower the overall carbon footprint of clothing products.

Notably, a product's total footprint is positively impacted by certification from sustainable forests.

Because of this, the packaging for food and stationery boldly displays PEFC certificates, while the fashion industry falls behind in highlighting its commitment to sustainable sourcing.

In the past two years, there has been a discernible improvement as fashion firms have come to understand the significance of sustainable forest certification.
