On August 16, a delegation led by Associated British Foods (ABF) CEO George Weston met with Faruque Hassan, President of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka, to discuss potential partnerships aimed at sustainability and boosting the country's commercial base.
The delegation also included Matt Rhodes, Manager of Primark, Paul Marchant, CEO of Primark, and Paul Lister, CFO of ABF. A division of Associated British Foods is Primark. George Weston acknowledged Primark's readiness to give Bangladesh top priority as a sourcing market throughout the discussion.
They talked about matters of shared concern, such as collaborating to fortify relationships with Bangladeshi suppliers so they may make more avant-garde, value-added goods and enhance their environmental performance.
Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), gave a presentation on the readymade garment sector of Bangladesh, highlighting its current position in the global market, its goals, and its advancements in workplace safety, environmental sustainability, and circular fashion.
Additionally, he highlighted the RMG sector's Sustainability Strategic Vision 2030 for Bangladesh, describing how it takes into account all relevant ESG problems for the industry and is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He informed the group of the steps being taken to improve environmental and human rights compliance in Bangladesh's RMG industry.
He also thanked ABF and Primark for making Bangladesh one of their top sourcing markets and urged them to acquire more clothing from Bangladesh, particularly expensive products and clothing made of man-made fibers.
The president of the BGMEA presented data on Bangladesh's garment exports to the UK market as well as opportunities to grow market share.
He also informed the delegation of the industry's top priorities, such as innovation, technology advancement, product diversification, skill development, and circularity, in an effort to overcome the sector's major difficulties and boost its competitiveness on the world market.
George Weston, CEO of ABF, complimented Bangladesh's garment sector for its growth in terms of environmental sustainability and workplace safety. He also expressed his gratitude for the BGMEA's initiatives and efforts in support of the growth of the apparel industry.
Both parties stated a desire to collaborate more closely on pertinent issues, such as education and worker well-being, as well as sustainability and manufacturing competitiveness.
At the meeting were also BGMEA Vice President Miran Ali, Directors Faisal Samad, Navidul Huq, Barrister Vidiya Amrit Khan, Shovon Islam, Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on Press, Publication and Publicity, and Mohammad Kamal Uddin, Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on Trade Fair.
