The Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken the lead in developing and exporting high-end clothing that is fit for the western export market while utilizing local traditional materials. The World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Government, in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce, have been running the program for the past two years as part of a project called the Integrated Development Framework (EIF).
The specifics of this program were given by BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at a news conference on June 21.
The event was held in the BGMEA headquarters in Uttara of the city, and attendees included Nila Hosne Ara, Director of BGMEA, Dr. Ayub Nabi Khan, Pro Vice Chancellor of BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT), and Mohammad Elias Miah, Deputy Secretary of the WTO Cell of the Ministry of Commerce.
"We want to produce high-end modern fashion products in fusion with local traditional textiles of Bengal in line with the international market," the president of BGMEA stated. This will diversify the product and raise the local value addition of clothing.
In order to promote Bangladesh's khadi, muslin, and regional historical themes like Shapla, Royal Bengal Tiger, Rickshaw Paint, etc. internationally, he said that two further independent projects have been launched. There was a new heritage website launch. It includes comprehensive details on diverse products, original designs, and locally sourced vintage goods.
160 participants from the apparel sector, including fashion designers, entrepreneurs, and local weavers, have received training through these projects. The trainees created some mood boards during the training.
In addition, nine teams totaling 20 individuals with backgrounds in fashion design created several prototypes of fusion goods. For instance, Jamdani, Muslin, and Siddha of Bangladesh are used to create bridal attire, evening gowns, party dresses, etc.
The president of the BGMEA was informed that a museum, complete with an exhibition space and an auditorium, would open in three months. Here, a job fair and placement services will be organized. Here, weavers can advertise and sell their goods.
He predicted that networking created by this training would be successful in the future. From here, we will additionally advertise the regional brands. Our market share is less than 7%. We intend to take it at 12%. If we succeed, we will reach our goal of $100 billion.
Additionally, he added, "We have started another recycling project. Bangladesh will become a center for recycling. As demonstrated, $5 million may be recycled into $50 million.
On this occasion, the president of the BGMEA launched a new legacy website. The website will showcase regionally distinctive design elements, crafts, weaving methods, information about the weavers, and their individual tales.
