Huawei & BGMEA Are Working Together To Build Green Bangladesh

Responsible 50 Star

The leading ICT infrastructure provider in the world, Huawei, and the trade group for the garment sector, BGMEA, will collaborate to overcome the current energy crisis and advance Bangladesh's greening efforts. At the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on 2022, BGMEA President Faruque Hasan and Pan Junfeng, CEO of Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd, signed an Agreement on behalf of their respective enterprises.

The fossil fuel and gas crisis, in accordance with BGMEA, is causing turmoil throughout the entire world, including Bangladesh. In such a situation, it is more crucial than ever to turn to alternate energy sources and concentrate on environmentally friendly energy solutions like solar panels to help the nation go green. Realizing these issues, BGMEA has partnered with Huawei to find green energy solutions.

According to the deal, Huawei and BGMEA will collaborate to convert the factories into "green factories" by directing clothing manufacturing toward renewable energy sources. Following the two components OPEX and CAPEX, Huawei will install solar power plants in factories listed on the BGMEA. Factory owners can benefit from lower tariff rates than grid electricity in the OPEX module.

The factory owner will, however, enter into a long-term repayment arrangement with the investor under the CAPEX module. The solar panel system will belong to the owner of the factory after the payment has been made in full. Also, the factory owners will put money into installing the rooftop solar system themselves in order to reduce their dependence on imported electricity. In both cases, BGMEA will control the processes and act as a communication link between Huawei and the factory.

In the meanwhile, the MoU gives Huawei and BGMEA the chance to deploy more than 2 GW of solar rooftop systems in the apparel sector, which will probably produce 2,600 TW of clean electricity annually. At the same time, it will ease the strain on the system and aid in resolving the nation's current energy problem.

The device will assist firms in saving the equivalent of 2.14 million trees—or 1.40 million tons of carbon dioxide—each year. Such approaches will assist the industry in significantly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and assist firms in becoming more cost-effective. Save money by taking advantage of cost-effective electricity rates.

In this regard, according to Faruque Hasan, the BGMEA's objectives include ensuring long-term growth in the apparel sector, equal opportunities for all, responsible energy use, the identification of renewable energy sources, and a decrease in carbon footprint. Thus, the sector must invest in smart technology to guarantee the use of renewable energy sources and efficient energy management.

He claimed that the OPEX model might be the best one for manufacturing. In order to generate green and renewable energy and lower carbon emissions, factories will be able to utilise the unused area of their rooftops through the OPEX model.

The cost of producing clothing is rising due to a power crisis that Bangladesh's apparel industry is currently experiencing, according to Pan Junfeng, CEO of Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd. In order to address this, Huawei is collaborating with BGMEA to find greener ways to supply more electrical demand (solar power). Above all, it will help manufacturers become green factories and ease the strain of surplus electricity supply on the national grid.
