President Faruque Hassan of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) met with Global Head of Sourcing Karin Lind and Head of Controlling Global Production Fredrik Kragh Myllenberg of H&M Group, a well-known international fashion store.

The December 11 meeting took place in Hong Kong. It covered bolstering enduring alliances, growing H&M's operations in Bangladesh, and collaborating on industry-wide sustainability projects for clothing.

Giant Group Director Azfar Hasan attended the meeting as well. This was disclosed in a December 11 circular from BGMEA.

According to the circular, both parties talked about the continuous cooperation between H&M Group and BGMEA to accomplish shared sustainability objectives in the garment industry, notably in speeding the shift towards a circular and climate-neutral apparel business in Bangladesh.

Faruque Hassan thanked H&M Group for helping to implement the recently declared minimum wage by coordinating prices in purchasing orders for Bangladeshi suppliers.

He expressed gratitude to the H&M Group for its pledge to support global efforts to cut carbon emissions by investing in renewable energy in Bangladesh.

H&M Group and Bestseller made a historic commitment to invest in a 500 MW offshore wind power project in Bangladesh during the COP28 meeting. The project, which is being developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), is anticipated to cut emissions by about 725,000 tons a year.

In order to support H&M Group's continued business growth, Faruque Hassan emphasized the importance of innovation, technological improvement, environmental sustainability, and skill development in Bangladesh's apparel industry.

Bangladesh wants to advance in the supply chain, he said, by diversifying into high-value goods and modernizing its technologies. In order to accomplish this, he further asked the H&M Group to work with its suppliers to create high-quality clothing.

Additionally, the president of the BGMEA requested the H&M Group to source more clothing from Bangladesh, particularly high-end items and clothing made of synthetic fibers.
