The US has been urged to simplify the importation process for cotton by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). During a polite meeting at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara of the city yesterday (7 May), BGMEA President Faruque Hassan called Peter Haas, the US Ambassador to Bangladesh.

According to Faruque Hassan, if duty-free market facilities are offered for clothing made from cotton imported from the United States, both Bangladeshi garment exporters and American cotton farmers will profit.

In order to improve economic relations between the US and Bangladesh, a number of topics of shared interest were covered at the conference, including the export of high-end clothing and cotton imports to the US market.

The BGMEA President informed the US Ambassador on this occasion of the significant advancements made in Bangladesh's garment sector in terms of workplace safety, environmental sustainability, and workers' rights and welfare.

According to Faruque Hassan, "These successes have improved the faith of international customers in the clothing created in Bangladesh. In the interim, Bangladesh has solidified its position as the country with the greatest concentration of eco-friendly apparel manufacturing facilities worldwide.

According to him, Bangladesh's garment sector is concentrating on diversification from basic items to value-added apparel, particularly non-cotton and technical textile-based products. It is also heavily investing in raising productivity, upgrading technical standards, and boosting efficiency in order to sustain growth.

In order to create a win-win situation for both US cotton farmers and Bangladeshi garment exporters, he encouraged the US government to offer duty-free market opportunities for cotton garments imported from the US. In the meantime, he asked for American assistance to speed up the importation of cotton from that country.

The President of the BGMEA informed the US Ambassador that the BGMEA would be organizing the Bangladesh Apparel Summit in the US in October 2023 and asked for his assistance in doing so. Additionally, he informed the ambassador of the actions made by the BGMEA to educate members about intellectual property rights and fake goods.

By coordinating the organization of training and workshops for employees, union leaders, and business owners, he sought the US government's assistance in fostering equitable industrial relations.

The US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas, praised the garment industry for achieving significant improvements in protecting workplace safety, workers' rights, and welfare, and emphasized the importance of building on these successes.
